A groundbreaking shift is coming to India's prestigious IITs, and it's about to change the game for students! Imagine studying at multiple IITs in one degree – a dream come true for many. But here's where it gets controversial: should students be able to choose their academic paths, or is the JEE rank the ultimate decider?
According to a Times of India report, from this academic year, Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) will introduce a novel concept: students can take courses at different IIT campuses and even spend a semester away from their home institute. This marks a significant departure from the traditional JEE-based system, which has long determined both entry and academic trajectory based on a single rank.
IIT Madras' director, Padma Shri V Kamakoti, revealed to the Times of India that they are aligning curricula across various IIT programs. This means a student from IIT Madras could study at another IIT for a term, and vice versa, earning credits that will be transferred back to their home institute.
Interestingly, while universities worldwide have embraced joint degree programs and academic partnerships, India's top technical institutes have largely operated independently. The recent meeting of academic deans from all IITs, hosted by IIT Madras, addressed this issue, with credit transfer and student mobility taking center stage.
A key concern has been rank integrity. Prathap Haridoss, dean of academics at IIT Madras, explained that large-scale transfers were previously restricted due to the rank-based admission process. However, the IIT Council has decided to seek approval from individual IIT senates to implement this change, transforming parallel campuses into a network of academic mobility.
The rationale? Students are increasingly mobile, engaging in internships and training across locations. Allowing them to take courses at another IIT during such opportunities makes practical sense. For instance, a student interning in Mumbai could attend courses at IIT Bombay for that semester.
The plan is to create a structured mechanism for semester-based mobility, similar to exchange programs with foreign universities. Initially, this will be a controlled implementation, with each IIT determining how many visiting students it can accommodate based on its infrastructure. However, if student movement is balanced, capacity concerns are mitigated, and the deans have already expressed broad agreement on this framework.
And this is the part most people miss: while the focus is on academic freedom, this initiative also addresses the practical needs of students pursuing diverse opportunities. So, is this the beginning of a new era for IITs, or a controversial disruption of a time-honored system? What do you think?
